American Sign
Language and Early Literacy Programs The Sir
James Whitney School (SJW) American Sign Language (ASL) and Early Literacy
Programs are available to provide ASL literacy and instruction to families of
deaf children on the Sir James Whitney Preschool Home Visiting caseload and to
others who need access to ASL and Literacy.
The objectives of the SJW ASL Literacy Consultant Program are:

to empower the family

to provide a positive role
model

to provide instruction in
ASL
-
to provide cultural
information
-
to ensure
access in the family home
-
to enhance the
family's
communication with their deaf/hard of hearing child
-
to share
their personal experience
-
to involve hearing families
with Deaf adults in social interaction

to improve parents' ability
to support their child's language and literacy
foundation before formal instruction begins at school
-
to facilitate
financial asistance for assistive devices
Home Visits
Initial guidance for parents
includes information and techniques to develop parenting skills in the following
areas:
Goals may vary according to the
parents' desired outcomes. Possibilities include:

interactive activities with
the child
-
storytelling
-
conversation with parents
-
accompaniment to a Deaf
community event
-
going to the library, park,
grocery store, etc.

and more.
