RESIDENCE ADMISSION GUIDELINES

PURPOSE

The Residence is established to provide a child-centered, safe, homelike environment for students who meet the requirements for acceptance to The Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf and who live outside the designated "Day Student" boundaries.

The Residence Program is designed to help deaf and hard of hearing students experience, deal with, and meet the ongoing challenges of life away from home.

The Program is not designed to deal with students who have extreme emotional problems and behaviours, for example:

- students with chronic assaultive behaviour towards others

- sexually aggressive students who will endanger others

- psychotic students

- students who are drug or alcohol users/abusers

- students who show persistent negative behaviour towards others

The Residence may consider students for Crisis Admission. Requests will be received on an individual-care basis in consultation with the student, parent/guardian, and referring person; i.e., Social Worker, Psychologist, Psychiatrist. Assessment of the student's individual needs and the availability of Residential Resources will be the basis for the decision made.

AGREEMENT FOR PROVISION OF SERVICE

The Sir James Whitney Residential Program is operated to provide a comfortable, enjoyable, homelike environment that encourages students to develop personal and interpersonal skills in a positive way that allows for easy, open communication with deaf and hearing role models.

Students can develop these individual and group skills through participation in programs provided, discussion groups with peers and/or counsellors, by observation, and by personal participation in their own growth and development.

The Residence environment strives to encourage independent thinking skills and a positive attitude towards oneself, peers, and staff.
