The Sir James Whitney Residential Program is operated to
provide a comfortable, enjoyable, homelike environment that encourages students
to develop personal and interpersonal skills in a positive way that allows for
easy, open communication with deaf and hearing role models.
Students can develop these individual and group skills through
participation in programs provided, discussion groups with peers and/or
counsellors, by observation, and by personal participation in their own growth
and development.
The Residence environment strives to encourage independent
thinking skills and a positive attitude towards oneself, peers, and staff.
The Residence is staffed with experienced deaf and hearing
role models who are available to the students for individual counselling or
discussion groups. The staff is responsible for adhering to school and residence
policies and procedures; for developing and supervising programs; for
maintaining the safety and security of each student; and for assisting the
students to accept responsibility for their behaviour.
