  • Question re: bus trips

- Judy Nemis checked - budget for Residence not cut

- Last 3 under budget - lost monies

- Gerard Kennedy will have meeting in Toronto to review

- If problem re busing, Gerard Kennedy to contact financial office (Mel Thompson)



  • Re: Meals for day students

- No change (per Colin)

- Cannot be put in this contract

- For more information - contact John Vanderzand

- Colin was asked to report back re: date of next renewal of food services contract

- Ken Roberts approached a Deaf member - declined

 

  • Re: Gibson building

- Ken Roberts has some information re funding to keep building - will discuss with Colin Nelson

Elections

  • Vice Chair - vacant for now

  • P.D.S.C. Rep.

- Sharol Caswell willing to stand for election

- David Nemis advised that there are concerns that there are no Deaf members on this group

-Neil feels we need rep - hearing or Deaf

- Only 5 Deaf parents in area - 3 work here, 2 not willing

Reports

Chairs Report

  • Request from SJW Alumni Association for standing on this council
  • Majority MUST BE parents to have quorum
  • Ministry guidelines prevent teachers who are Deaf from being on council - undue hardship
  • We are not under the guidelines, but Chair would like to put something in writing in order to clarify who can be a member
  • Alumni may not be stakeholders - effects of that?

  • Re: reimbursement for child care expenses incurred during the strike

- $100.00/week paid to parents during action in '97 - payments to parents during strike in spring? - Neil contacted Ernie Parsons to get information for us - still investigating (Ernie is not optimistic)

  • Ernie Parsons asked to come to a council meeting

  • Proposal to develop bylaw re: new members on the Council - eg. employees allowed to serve due to unique situation

  • Kate Brown re: Bingo proposal

  • Request from Gerard Kennedy to support presentation to Ministry of Transportation re: laws that prevent Deaf from getting school bus licences

- Neil supports as a parent, not as Chair

  • Endorsement of Neil to speak on behalf of the Council

  • Brought draft minutes for posting
  • Reviewed proposed capital budget (copy to Chair - he will hold until passed)
  • SJW - renovations of residence buildings - $4.5 million - over 4 years
  • TECHDeaf Res. - Greene Hall Superintendent's house Sagonaska Residence
  • Reviewed release re: (Protecting students from abuse)
  • Discussed IEP reviews - saw improvements
  • Teacher appraisals - Principals will get palm pilots for documentation
  • Director's position - Helen retiring December 31st
  • Bill 110- Education Improvement
  • Need a second rep. For P.D.S.C. - Judy will be an alternate
  • Chair can be an alternate if council approves
  • Next meeting - December 4th @ 9:00 a.m. - orientation
  • Neil will attend Motion - David Nemis

  • Letter going home tomorrow from Craig Barnes re: oil spill on campus

  • Anne Carr - Apartment Program - on its' way

- 2 grads in there

- a wonderful learning experience

  • Public Health - will give course on food handling
  • Enright Insurance - presentation on insurance
  • ½ day P.A. Day - Residence Students will go to Toronto
  • 2 IMAX movies - ROM
  • Focus Program - new student in Jr. Area program
  • Rasa - explaining ODSP funding etc to TAG classes
  • Larraine - Volleyball Tournament - successful - thank you to Arleigh and Leadership Class
 

Student Parliament Report

  • October 31st - Haunted House and dance - successful
  • Student involved in volunteering
  • After school - Nina and Chantal discussing issues or complaints with high school students - want programs to be challenging to them - want harder work

- ideas? - bring back some to next meeting

- maybe use a survey

Maintenance Report - Colin Nelson

  • Still painting Sports Centre
  • Roofs - main school, TEC
  • Automatic system at pool
  • Evacuation books - working on it
  • Greene Hall - kitchen will be renovated
  • Perry House & Focus - will get "Tempor Air"- a kind of AC
  • Should start soon
  • Renovations to Health Services - sick bay room & washroom
  • Apartment Ok - alarm approved
  • Oil leak - working on it (diesel)

- Monday excavating

- will take approximately 50 truckloads of fill out to Napanee

- must be cleaned up

  • Gym floor - waxed for 1st time in 7 years - slippery

- error - put mop oil on floor - has been scrubbed off

- any dust makes it slippery

- will be waxed yearly from now on

  • New Sag. Residence - example of what will happen with renovations later

Bring & Brag

  • Volleyball Tournament - involved 87 students, SJW did well
  • Unique Christmas Celebration - Thursday, December 19th
  • Residence set up " Dancing Hands"demo. - 1st meeting was last night, will present at U.C.C.

  • Ernie Parons is the critic for disability issues
  • Neil will extend an invitation to Ernie to come to council meeting to hear concerns
  • Neil will extend an invitation to Ernie to attend the Unique Christmas Celebration to introduce himself.
