| TOWARDS INDEPENDENCE PROGRAM (T.I.P)
The Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf Residential Program offers to
graduate students an Independent Living Skills Program. This Program was
developed in order to give graduate students an opportunity to learn and
develop the skills they will require to live independently should they decide
to attend college or receive further job skill training. To provide them with
this training, the students do not live in the Senior Greene Hall residence
with their peers but in a separate self contained area similar to an
apartment on the Sir James Whitney campus. They have the opportunity to
continue their involvement in various residential activities such as
swimming, ball hockey etc. Students in the program are to be 18 years of age
or older and will be living on their own with some guidance and instruction
from residential staff. Some of the areas of instruction are money management
(the program’s budget is based on a financial point system), food
management, health, housekeeping, transportation, knowledge of community
resources and Deaf survival skills.

The
program is divided into 2 or 3 terms during the year. This gives the
opportunity for 4 to 6 students hands on experience in apartment
living. Each term has 2 students of the same gender share the
"apartment". Length of the term depends
on the individual needs of the students. The areas
of instruction will also be adapted to the needs of the students during
their term. Residential Staff in the Greene Hall Residence work closely
with the students and provide them with numerous real life challenges so
they may learn from their experiences. |

As the students progress through the program, the
objectives become more difficult and place more emphasis on student
responsibility and independence. |
